One of the benefits of direct-to-film (DTF) transfers is the ability to layer designs for a multidimensional effect. However, achieving a clean press on layered artwork requires some finesse. Follow these tips from Arcebuche Print Lab for pressing quality multi-layered DTF transfers:
1. Print Layers as Separate Sheets
First, have your layered artwork printed as individual DTF transfer sheets. Aligning everything in one press is extremely difficult. Separating layers gives you more control and precision.
2. Start with Bottom Layer
Press your bottom layer transfer first as a base. For full coverage back designs, use an alignment jig to center the design properly. Apply for 6-8 seconds with medium pressure.
3. Preheat Garment Again
Before adding subsequent layers, reheat the garment for 5 seconds to release any residual moisture and reactivate the adhesive. This step ensures better adherence of the layers.
4. Align Second Layer
Cover the bottom layer with release paper and carefully position the next layered transfer sheet. Use alignment marks or center guides to ensure accurate placement.
5. Press Layers Individually
Press each layer separately right after aligning. Use lighter pressure and 4-5 second presses to avoid movement. After each press, check the positioning to ensure the layers are aligned correctly.
6. Finish with Top Layer
Continue building up from bottom to top, preheating the garment between each layer. Once all layers are aligned and pressed, give the top layer a final press for full adherence.
7. Stretch Test Results
After the final layer cools, perform a stretch test by stretching the garment in multiple directions. Ensure the layers stick properly and don’t crack or lift. If necessary, press again to secure the layers.
